Hywel Francis

Hywel Francis (1946-2021) was the Labour MP for Aberavon from 2001 and 2015. He was chair of the all-party Archives and History Group and under his leadership established a permanent exhibition on the Chartist Movement in Parliament. He was an authority on the history of the South Wales Labour movement and a founder of the South Wales Miners’ Library and the Bevan Foundation.
Hywel Francis was co-author of the definitive history of the South Wales miners and also studies of Welshmen who served in the International Brigades and The Miners’ Strike of 1984-85 in Wales (all published by LW). He was an Emeritus Professor at Swansea University, a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and the Learned Society of Wales, and President of Llafur, the People’s History Society of Wales.
